I mentioned before I wouldn’t mind getting involved with the Metropolitan Works project (see Metropolitan works workshop rental). Well I had a meeting yesterday with the organisation of Metropolitan works and came to an agreement to supervise the workshop some days a week in return for some free workspace time. So you should be able to find me there from the 14th of this month onwards. Sounds exciting.

So my workshop problem seems to be solved. I went to see the possibility to rent a workshop space at Metropolitan works in east London. This is a truly amazing project. Metropolitan works is connected to the metropolitan university and is basically an initiative to provide technology, training and workspaces for designers, artists, engineers and other businesses to develop and realise creative and innovative ideas. It’s all brand new with some great and state of the art machinery, ranging from basic woodworking machinery to laser and water jet cutting machines, laser sintering, a huge 5 axis CNC routing machine and a rentable computer space with Rhino and Solidworks. I append some pictures below. You can rent workshop facilities on a pay and go daily basis or can choose to rent an enclosed space on a weekly basis. So a whole bunch of creative people will be working together next to a university full with creative students. If you have seen my initiative with ID-Sphere you can imagine that this is a project after my own heart (wouldn’t mind getting involved a couple of days a week.) So basically I will apply for a workspace there starting somewhere mid April, for 4-5 weeks so I can prepare for my exhibition end June. I’ll keep you posted how I get on.

Metropolitan works near Aldgate east here in London rents out workshop space at 32£ a day. It seems a great facility which I will check out today. Let’s hope. It sounds better than my back garden.

I had a couple of offers to rent a workshop on a temporary basis which could get me out of trouble. (see I have got myself into trouble) One at 50£ a day and the other at 60£ a day. It includes use of all machinery but still, it seems excessive to me even for London. Obliviously I have 3 or 4 pieces which I made myself, but hardly enough for an exposition. I may decide to just buy me some small machinery and do small work in the back garden. Should be an interesting challenge. I’ll keep you posted.

So I got myself in trouble with an exposition at the end of June. It is a local initiative here in West London called Artists At Home. Basically artists and designers open up their house to show their work. Of course no problem with that but the work needs to be made by the artists themselves. Since I have been in London there is little work I have made myself. My work in London is mainly interior design and I am mainly using subcontractors to carry it out. I have a fully equipped workshop in Spain but at current can not really justify the time nor could I justify financially flying back and forwards to make a couple of pieces. I don’t really want to cheat either and have it made by somebody else pretending I did it myself. Hmm.. need to think about this one.
